RC Transmitter Latency Explained — Does Your Radio System Actually Matter?

When it comes to RC racing, most people agonize over motors, tires, and chassis setup. But there's a variable almost nobody talks about that's happening every single time you move the wheel or trigger: transmitter latency. How fast does your radio actually send the signal from your hands to your car?

I ran real latency tests on three popular systems in 2021 — the FlySky Noble NB4, Sanwa MT4, and Traxxas TQi — to find out if the price difference is justified. Since that video, the radio market has moved significantly. This article is updated to show what's now current technology in 2025–2026.

What Is Transmitter Latency?

Latency is the delay between when you move the transmitter controls and when the car actually responds, measured in milliseconds (ms). In everyday driving it's barely noticeable — but in close-quarters racing at speed, even 10–20ms can be the difference between catching a slide and binning it into the boards.

RC radios operate in the 2.4GHz band using proprietary RF protocols that determine how often the transmitter and receiver communicate (the update/frame rate). That protocol is what directly sets latency — and it's evolved considerably in recent years.

The 2025–2026 Radio Landscape: What's Changed

Since my original latency test video in 2021, every major brand has moved to new flagship radio models and protocols. Here's where things stand now:

Sanwa — M17S with FH5/FH5U Protocol

The MT-S and MT44 are now discontinued older FH4-protocol radios. Sanwa's current flagship is the M17S, released late 2024, running the FH5/FH5U protocol. The "FH5U" (Ultra) mode doubles the data transmission rate compared to FH5, enabling what Sanwa calls "smoother operation and improved response in SXR mode." The M17S also features a 16-bit AD converter — up from the M17's 12-bit — giving significantly finer resolution on stick movements. The M17S is widely regarded as one of the fastest-response transmitters in the world right now. The M17 and M17S FH5 receiver ecosystem (RX-493i and newer) provide the fastest response times and richest features.

Also worth noting: the mid-range Sanwa MT5 and MT-R (FH5 protocol) is a more accessible entry point into the current Sanwa ecosystem but ONLY work with FH5, no backwards FH4 compatability.

NETCRUZER NOTES: The last mid range Sanwa Radio to support the FH4 protocol receivers was the MT44. Newer mid tier Sanwa Radios now only support FH5. If you want backwards compatibility you need an MT44 or older, OR a M17 or M12 flagship Sanwa radio system.

FlySky — Noble NB4+ and Noble NB4 Pro+

The original NB4 is now succeeded by the NB4+ (8-channel) and the NB4 Pro+ (up to 18 channels, including a dedicated 2-channel ultra-fast mode). Both run AFHDS 3 protocol and support binding modes in 2 way telemetry (slower but still plenty fast for racing) or ultra-fast 1 way. The Pro+ adds more channel options, enhanced telemetry, and slightly more advanced programming — but as racers on r/rccars note, the standard NB4+ gives "identical lap times" at a lower price. Either way, the AFHDS 3 latency is competitive with anything short of top-tier Sanwa.

NETCRUZER NOTES: Have owned an NB4 and now a NB4+. The NB4 is still a solid budget choice but the NB4+ is better in every way. NB4+ has a much brighter screen, faster nicer interface, and a premium foam for the wheel (feels super nice!). The FlySky Noble range of radios also support a RM005 USB module that goes inside the handle, which adds support for KYOSHO MINI-Z reciever binding! That operates slower than AFHDS3 but it's a great option to elevate your mini racing experience.

Spektrum — DXC+ and iXSR+ with DSMR+

Spektrum's big 2025 news is their new DSMR+ protocol and the first dual-protocol transmitters: the DXC+ and flagship iXSR+. DSMR+ offers improved frequency agility and faster response than the original DSMR. Crucially, both radios support dual protocol — they can bind to both DSMR and SLT receivers, meaning one radio can control your entire Spektrum RC fleet regardless of protocol used in the Spektrum Rx. The iXSR+ features a 4.5-inch Android-powered touchscreen. A strong option for Spektrum ecosystem users upgrading in 2025–2026.

NETCRUZER NOTES: The Spektrum Radio systems are big, bulky, expensive, and are a chore to update firmware with special cables and windows PC needed in many cases. Also, the Spektrum interface is harder to use, and slightly opposite from other brands, such as using the term INF to mean OFF, and the Exponential settings reversed (postive expo is actually negative expo equivalent in Sanwa/FlySky)

Futaba — 7PX with T-FHSS

Futaba's current surface flagship remains the 7PX running T-FHSS protocol with Super Response Mode. A 4.3-inch full-colour transflective touchscreen (readable outdoors), 7 channels, and full telemetry. Futaba's T-FHSS delivers competitive latency for high-end club and national-level racing. The 4PM Plus is the more affordable 4-channel entry point into the T-FHSS ecosystem.

NETCRUZER NOTES: Not used a Futaba since the 1990s when we had to run radio crystals, but Futaba is very much a popular choice for racers with many mid and high end options. Research well before buying in as features and usability differs greatly across their range.

Test Results Revisited: Does Protocol Generation Matter?

My original test showed the Sanwa MT4 (FH4) beating the FlySky NB4 (AFHDS 3) by roughly 10ms (estimated real world high speed recorded footage), with the Traxxas TQi noticeably behind both with a delay you could clearly see on high speed video. With the current generation, that gap has widened at the top — the M17S FH5U is meaningfully faster than the MT4 ever was — but the NB4+ has also improved. The FlySky-to-Sanwa gap remains similar in real-world terms: measurable in lab conditions, but this latency is now so low that it's not feelable at club racer competition level.

The bigger news is what happened in the mid-range: the new Spektrum DSMR+ and Futaba T-FHSS Super Response protocols now make all four major brands genuinely competitive. The era of Sanwa being in a completely different league is narrowing — though the M17S FH5U is still the benchmark.

Which Radio Should You Buy in 2025–2026?

Best value — FlySky Noble NB4+ (~$299): The sweet spot for club and pro racers alike. AFHDS 3 latency is fast enough that your driving is the limiting factor. Great touchscreen, telemetry, 8 channels, 2 way and 1 way ultra low latency binding modes. The NB4 Pro+ adds 18 channels and pro level racing features (and special drag racing modes) if you need it.

For your Consideration — Spektrum DXC+ or iXSR+: If you're already in the Spektrum ecosystem, these are the radios to upgrade to in 2025. Dual protocol means no receiver swap required on your SLT or DSMR protocol fleet.

Best for serious high budget racing — Sanwa M17S: Still the latency king. FH5U protocol is the fastest available. Worth the premium if you're racing at national level or just want the best. Prepare your wallet for spendy for new FH5 protocol RX-493i receivers to get the lowest latency in the industry.

For Traxxas owners not yet racing — TQi with Traxxas Link Module: Before spending on a new radio, update your TQi firmware with the Traxxas Link Bluetooth Module. It won't fix the latency gap, but it keeps your current system optimised and enables phone-based tuning and easy automatic multi model switching and programmability. It's feature rich, albiet a little slow for competition use.

Bottom Line

The current benchmarks are the Sanwa M17S (FH5U), FlySky NB4+ and Pro+ (AFHDS 3), and Futaba 7PX (T-FHSS Super Response). For most club racers, the NB4+ is the smartest buy. For top-level competition, the M17S is still the one to beat.
